To enter Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith’s exquisite Mattituck garden is to experience the wonder of India, the flora of the Himalayas and the landscape of Japan without leaving the North Fork.
“It’s like falling down the rabbit hole,” Schrader said during a recent tour of the garden that surrounds the couple’s home.
The pair, who run the adjacent landscape wholesale company Landcraft Environments, opened the grounds to the public as part of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program on Saturday. The non-profit organization works to preserve beautiful gardens around the nation.
Schrader and Smith purchased the 14-acre farm in 1992 when it was just an overgrown and abandoned potato and corn farm. Today, the property features their lovely 4-acre garden with a hideaway tiki hut, two ponds, a 12-seat handcrafted dining table and hundreds of thousands of local and exotic plants from around the world.
The pair have drawn inspiration from around the globe, from the windmill palm plant grown from Himalayan seeds to the coffee table in the tiki hut imported from India and fashioned from an elephant’s saddle.
